Glow worms in Britain

The records sent in by BNA members were published in a series of articles by Anthony Wootton  in Country-Side 1971, 21 456-463 and 572-574, and XXII, No 6, Spring 1974, 266-271. These have been retyped and are presented in a compilation here county by county. To make it easier to search each area I have often added records for surrounding counties, so there is considerable repetition within the lists. In each case I have added some more recent sightings from the 1991 and 1992 surveys. Apologies to those people who have contributed new sites since then – I have lacked the time to add them to these lists.

Please note that any four-figure grid references are usually only to the 1-km squares in which the site is found, for database purposes, and are not accurate, while the six-figure references are to individual sites.

Anyone wanting to help with the survey is urged to revisit the old sites in particular to see if glow worms are still present. Bear in mind that some sites may be on private property, and of course some may have changed completely. Unfortunately, many of the old sites are listed by name only, with no detail, so the exact site is now unknown. I have tried to find details of Wootton's original records without success, but it is likely that he reported all the information that was given to him.
